AI can speed up your work in an incredible way. It isn't just a trend - it's a real, massive shift. Understanding a gnarly problem used to mean reading dozens of books and spending a huge amount of time on it. These days? You used to have to spend half a day hunting down a bug in the code - now... all it takes is some tokens and the right prompt.

AI - how can it make your work in Odoo easier?

That intro might be a bit over the top. I don't think AI can fully replace domain knowledge. After a deep dive into the literature, we'd certainly know more. But the question is: do we always need that? Often a quick fix for a problem that just popped up is enough, without getting into academic detail. AI lets you trace a topic almost instantly and usually hands you a ready-made solution.

Usually - because sometimes it gets things wrong, or gets stuck in some incomprehensible loop. But for AI to actually help us with something, it needs the right context.

Speaking specifically about an Odoo integration - the AI needs to know Odoo's code, your custom code (custom modules), and if you want its help with the database, it also needs secure access to that data. Odoo's base code (at least the Community edition) is public, so you can assume AI models have already scanned it and know it well. What's left is the question of private code and company data.

AI in Odoo - how does it work?

Odoo has made sure AI is natively available inside its software. That gives it immediate access to your data and your entire environment's configuration. You can use it as a chat, or trigger it through automated actions.

There's one thing, though, that effectively puts me off using it directly from the app - IAP credits (In-App Purchases).

To use Odoo's native AI, you have to buy credits - prepaid points the system consumes as it generates content. The problem is that with heavy use, it's very easy to lose control of costs and overpay for operations that external models can do for a fraction of the price.

The alternative - connecting your own Codex or Claude license to Odoo

So how can you approach this more smartly? Just integrate the AI model you already use (e.g. with a license you're already paying for) with your own repository and/or give it read access to your Odoo database data. It's a simple, fast solution.

I should note this is a basic integration. It may fall a bit short of what full-blown commercial plugins on the market offer - but given that the real cost is a fraction of the IAP price, it's absolutely worth it!

Once you've decided to take this step and have a Claude or OpenAI (Codex / GPT-4) license, you need to give the AI access to your custom code, so the model understands exactly how your Odoo instance works. How do you do that? - Claude has a dedicated connector. You set it up through the GitHub integration option (Settings > Connectors). Just give it access to the private repositories that contain your Odoo modules. - OpenAI (Codex) also has its own options for connecting to repositories, available through the platform's dashboard.

Once your model of choice is connected, you can ask your AI assistant about a specific, unusual piece of Odoo functionality, and get back an answer that takes your own custom code into account. That saves you time, and you don't need to bring in a consultant for every small issue. Note - sometimes it's worth reminding the assistant in your prompt which repository to look for the code in :)

Giving AI access to Odoo data

There are many ways to expose Odoo data to an AI assistant. The most "correct" and modern architecture would mean standing up your own MCP (Model Context Protocol) server. But for a quick integration, there's a much simpler way!

You don't need any complicated setup. Just grant the AI assistant access to Odoo through the built-in JSON-RPC API.

For that, you need to generate an API authorization token (API Key) in Odoo. That token is generated for a specific user account and inherits exactly that user's access rights. If you want the AI to only be able to read data from Odoo, create a new user in the system (e.g. "AI_Agent"), give it strict read-only permissions, and generate a token for it.

There's no dedicated connector for the connection on the AI side - you simply pass the generated token to your AI agent so it can authorize requests to Odoo.

Important for security reasons: never paste your API token directly into the chat window (in your prompts)! Instead, in your development environment, add it to a .env file as an environment variable (e.g. ODOO_SECRET). If you're not sure how to set that up correctly, tell your AI agent that you want to securely pass it an API Authorization Token for an external system, and it will walk you through implementing it according to good security practices.
